Hi, I'm old and grumpy. At least that's what I tell store clerks and receptionists when they ask, "How are you?" Sometimes that will get them to grin. Sometimes they wince and think, "Oh no, another guy who thinks he's funny."
As an introduction to this group, I will reveal that I graduated from college in 1975 with my degree in engineering with no thought in mind of focusing much of my life's experience on boundary surveying. Many longtime surveyors will tell you a similar tale of starting out in one direction, eventually getting into surveying and, then, sticking with surveying for decades. My experiences range from single lot surveys to construction layout and ALTA surveys on multimillion dollar properties. Started out when GPS, total stations and inexpensive handheld calculators with trigonometric functions were science fiction. Plumb bobs and steel tapes were the norm. Have survived all the various upgrades in equipment, computers and software to adequately function in today's world. It is impossible to guess what upgrades you will encounter over your next 40 years. Have operated my own small firm for the past 28 years so that I could have the pleasure of yelling at the boss (me) on a routine basis for being too demanding.
I promise to check in from time to time to see if I can offer any seasoned advice.
