History of Kaskakia
Saw an episode of "How the States Got their Shapes" and this town between Illinois and Missouri was featured. It was once a thriving capital of Illionois but repeated flooding from the Mississippi River, and an eventual shift, caused the river to move from the west side of town to the east and cut off the town from its own state. Today, the town has an Illinois area code and a Missouri zip code. A cool example of riparian rights affecting state borders. Would have made a cool paper. I might have to dig into the legal/surveying side to get a bigger picture. Just thought it was cool.

Interesting. On Google Earth you can see the many iterations of historic river channels in the area. The avulsion on this mighty river must be a sight to behold!
